“A landmark building in York boasting a prime position opposite the Minster. A pretty traditional exterior opens onto chic modern interiors featuring soft hues, clean lines and chic black tiled bathrooms. The cuisine is unfussy, local and undeniably good and staff are friendly and attentive.”

Hotel Review

Opposite the magnificent west door of the Minster, a 30-metre stroll away, it doesn’t get much better for a hotel location in York. Many of the bedrooms, plus the dining-room, also enjoy the view - bag the corner-window table for breakfast, and you’ll want to stay all day. One of the city’s best-known hotels, in what was originally three separate Victorian houses built as guest accommodation for the Minster’s clergy, it’s recently had a makeover to give it a light contemporary feel: dark-wood floors, shiny wallpapers and bold lighting. Bedrooms, too, have been given a soft, streamlined look with touches of silver and gold, pale-wood furniture and perhaps a feature wallpaper. A refreshing lack of clutter makes the most of space, so even small rooms don’t feel cramped while bathrooms are bright and spacious, some with glitzy tiling. Food is confidently traditional, with a splendid Yorkshire-style afternoon tea. All major sights are walkable - the Walls five minutes, National Railway Museum and the station 10 minutes, Castle Museum 15 minutes - so there’s no excuse for not seeing the city. Then come back to a glass of wine and listen to the Minster’s bells.
