After a multi-million euro restoration, the Florence Four Seasons finally opened in June 2008. Standing in the unique, 8-acre Giardino della Gherardesca, the hotel occupies a magnificent Renaissance palazzo complete with frescoes, elaborate stucco work and sculptures. Grand public spaces surround a graceful courtyard while the fine restaurant is housed in a cool vaulted room overlooking the gardens. Facilities include a gorgeous outdoor pool, a spa and fitness centre. Many of the discreetly luxurious bedrooms and suites overlook the grounds. Although it’s not bang in the centre, it’s worth the walk to stay here.

"With its oil paintings, antiques and slightly Old Parisian décor, it’s all elegantly sumptuous, and in the best possible haute-bourgeois taste."

"It was a sensational meal, worth every cent of the €291 it cost, including the delectable pre-dinner Bellinis of fresh white peach, liquidised and topped up with prosecco."

"Rooms with frescoes and ceiling murals have amenities made by a Florence-based perfumer, and public areas showcase Renaissance art."
