Hotel Review
Entered from a busy main street, The Galaxy’s calm comfort is instantly palpable: porters rush to help with the luggage; sweets and a welcome drink are offered; the air conditioning works its instant magic. Neutral tones, combined with lounge seating and tables scattered with designer tomes, characterise the dim-lit lobby. In contrast, the vast, glassed Vetri restaurant’s four-storey-tall windows next door look out onto a bright-and-airy inner courtyard surrounding a huge freshwater pool (the islands’ largest, apparently). There are 127 rooms with sea or city view balconies, equipped with cosy sofas and low tables for lounging, or desk space and high-speed internet for workaholics. These include several Pure Allergy rooms (quite a groundbreaking innovation for Greece) featuring hypoallergenic bedding and a dedicated air purification system. A healthy breakfast buffet is served in the Vetri restaurant, or out on the pool terrace. Dinner, served either in the glass-surrounded Vetri, or cosier Per Se restaurant, is Greek fusion (think Cretan mithizra cheese soufflés, Greek salad with feta cheese mousse), prepared from organic ingredients and locally produced extra virgin olive oil. Close to the city’s main sights (and within easy reach of an 18 hole golf course, famous archaeological sites and a string of unspoilt beaches), The Galaxy’s good-value combination of modern creature comforts and olde worlde attentive service makes this a real find.
