A well-run friendly all-inclusive resort that sees guests return year after year. All the rooms are beachfront apart from the idyllic Gauguin suites, which are romantic rural cottages tucked away in the gardens. The sea here attracts local surfers and is dramatic to look at if not always safe to swim (there is a flag system in operation). On red flag days there's a calm bay nearby for swimming. Other activities on offer include tennis, volleyball, cycling, yoga, fishing and croquet, while the spa offers aromatic local treatments using home-grown ingredients such as lemongrass and ginger. An extensive kitchen garden is harvested for the restaurants of which there are four. The beachfront Gauguin’s is an Instagrammable spot, while fine dining is offered for a surcharge at Ismay’s at the other end of the beach. Food and drink are free-flowing with a call button by the loungers at the pool to ensure cocktails are on demand.

Tucked away on a hillside in a quiet area of north-west Antigua – and a stone's throw from Giorgio Armani's cliffside estate...
