A wonderfully old-fashioned and genteel hotel, in a wonderfully old-fashioned and genteel resort, the privately owned Grange Hotel was built in 1866 in elegant Victorian Italianate style. The warmth of welcome is as heartening as the view is lovely: on a wooded hillside looking over the little town with its quirky shops and tea rooms, bandstand and mile-long promenade. Rooms are swagged, draped and tassled and soothingly decorated. There's also an indoor pool, hot tub and beauty salon.

"Inside it's opulently decorated in rococo style, with giant gilded urns of flowers on plinths in the public areas and carved putti lurking cheerfully round every corner."
