Hotel review

Located on an incredibly narrow side street, the Hotel das Virtudes all but blends into the rock amphitheatre that encases it. The building dates from the 16th century, and the recent renovation blends some of the original stonework with reproduction wooden beams. King-size beds, wooden floors, and furniture with earthy colours and tweedy accents, imbue the rooms with a cozy, lived-in feel. Yet despite the stone, it is an airy, light space. Almost all rooms are west-facing (which makes up for a lack of lighting within), and many come with balconies that benefit from the late afternoon heat, and have excellent views of the Douro River, the grand Alfândaga exhibition hall and transport museum, and the Arrábida bridge.

The location is premium, only a five-minute walk to the city centre. One of Porto’s few remaining trams makes a stop nearby, and to climb the steep hill to Virtudes park, there is an escalator installed nearby. The park, a terraced greenery, is the most popular spot in Porto for sunset gazing, though guests can get the same views from the rooftop terrace and bar.

Check in comes with a free drink from the lobby bar, and bottles of complimentary port are available in the room. The on-site restaurant Través serves traditional Portuguese fare with a twist – deconstructed octopus rice, pork cheeks with peach – and French-style desserts. A hot breakfast is also served here, with a variety of local cheese, meats, and breads.

While the hotel lacks a pool and a gymnasium, massages and personal trainers can be booked and tailored to your needs. Best of all, there is a sense of remove from the hubbub of the city centre, a feeling of being cloistered in a place of calm and quiet in a private Porto of red roofs, hanging laundry, crying seagulls, and the smell of grilled fish.

Map & Location

See what they say

Why do people love staying in your hotel? Virtudes is from the heart. Everything is done to honor the building’s extensive history.

What is there to do in the area? Hotel das Virtudes draws visitors into a forgotten corner of the city (but one that’s still a reasonable walk from the major sights), the Ribeira neighborhood 3 minutes walking distance, the Gaia river with its wineries and Porto city view, the Aliados square (city center) and the famous Lello Library

What kind of breakfast do you offer? Buffet with hot and cold dishes, also includes hot dishes on request, for example Eggs Benedict, florentine eggs, pancakes, etc.

Do you offer other meals? And can you recommend good places to eat out locally? We have three outlets, the Restaurant Traves (open everyday for lunch: 1pm to 3 pm and for dinner: from 7 pm to 10:30 pm), also the Amura Rooftop & Lounge Bar with light meals from 12 pm until midnight and the room service available 24 hours. Porto has an amazing gastronomic offer, we recommend accordingly with preference of our guest, that can go from the famous sandwich "Francesinha" to the fine dining michelin star restaurant.

Which are your most popular room types, and why? The Miragaia rooms, because of the balcony with the sunset view and the view over the Miragaia neighborhood.

What facilities do you have for children and can you fit extra beds in your rooms ? We don´t have any extra beds, we have cribs available and the amenities for the children.

What message would you like to give The Hotel Guru readers? We’re not discovering gunpowder here, but we’re making things better. We’re trying to go the extra mile for everyone’s needs.
