The Hotel de la Loge is a 15-20 minute walk from Perpignan's railway station, in a 16th century building which stands on a quiet lane. Inside, glass globe lights dangle over a wrought iron stair. Off the first floor landing, an inner roof area is filled with shrubs and flowers. Rooms, split over two floors, are larger than you might expect from a building of this era. They're plainly but attractively decorated, with fitted carpets, plain white walls and white linen on queen-sized beds. Furniture is in keeping with Perpignan's art-deco heritage, with curvy chairs and glass-topped writing desks. Curtained alcoves serve as wardrobes. Bathrooms are equally plain, but some have full sized tubs. Some rooms have miniature balconies, just big enough for a round-topped café table. Family rooms sleep three, and cots and high chairs can be provided on request. Breakfast is the only meal provided, and can be served in your room. There's free wifi throughout, and cut-price parking 200 yards from the door.

This small and friendly hotel in the historic centre of picturesque Perpignan is an excellent base for a sightseeing short break (or a sporting trip to this rugby-mad city). It's also cosy enough to be a place to chill, not just sleep.
