The city has plenty of big and flashy hotels but few independently owned places with character and style. DeBrett is a shining example of the latter. The handsome Victorian building is punchily furnished with a mix of Art Deco and vintage pieces. Public spaces retain their original wood panelling - the cocktail bar is superb - handsomely complimented by big Art Deco wall-lights and glossy mirrors. Bedrooms are quietly glamorous with mirrored wardrobes and a mix of vintage and retro furnishings that might include Ercol armchairs, '60s white pedestal tables and velvet sofas. Colours are bold, as are the striped carpets, while bathrooms are big and jazzy in black-and-white polka-dot tiling. Loft suites with mezzanine bedrooms are ideal for romantics. The open-kitchen dining room has a decent continental breakfast and a short modern-bistro menu in the evening. Views aren't great but it's quiet and in a good location: just off the main drag, Queen Street, and five minutes to the waterfront.
