Everyone's idea of a luxury Swiss five-star hotel and spa, and has been since its foundation in 1842, though there is nothing old-fashioned about the guest offering. With a lobby that looks like a forest of marble doric columns, the "Three Crowns" offers a grand retreat from the cares of the world, its main offerings being stunning mountain views across Lake Geneva to Le Grammont, Les Dents du midi and the conical Le Catogne ("our Mount Fuji"), a renown terrace restaurant and a well-equipped spa staffed with top-level health and beauty consultants. Not many fitness centres have chandeliers like these! Over the years it has been patronised by international royalty, composers like Gonoud, (who composed his opera Faust here), Saint Saens and writers like Henry James and Graham Greene. Charlie Chaplin, who lived nearby, was also a regular visitor. With a history as rich as this, it's little wonder that successive renovations have retained the period feel of the rooms and public areas, though there is a fine balance achieved between the grand and the cosily romantic, the lavish (champagne in the gorgeous breakfast buffet, if you so desire) and the restrained, period features and modern amenities
