Bedded in just around the corner from the magnificent Roman Amphitheatre of Arles, Hotel du Cloittre is a breath of fresh air. Its fun wall murals and endearing blue washed walls exude a laid-back style. The rooms are unpretentious, focusing on providing comfortable, spacious sleeping areas. Modern art pervades throughout the hotel with interesting pictures and installations dotted all over the place. On a summer's evening, the roof terrace is the perfect place to enjoy a bottle of local wine and watch the sun drop over the Arles skyline. The city has plenty of treasures to explore with its UNESCO World Heritage Site Roman architecture, and its superb new Van Gogh Museum. A really characterful option.
