Aiming to be ‘classical rather than trendy, comfortable rather than luxurious’, the Rival succeeds stylishly and it has moved the centre of gravity south into Södermalm, an up-and-coming, slightly Bohemian area only three stops on the metro from the central station. Its 1937 building was beautifully modernised in 2002; new carpets were woven, fine furniture bought, artworks commissioned. It looks chic, young and bright. A cinema, bakery, bars and bistro are skilfully wound into the ground floors. The best rooms face the attractive square. Benny Andersson (ABBA) is behind it; this is today’s Grand for a band.

"It is tastefully decorated in classic boutique-hotel style, with a modern art-deco interior. It even has an on-site bakery and restored cinema, small touches that help make it a very comfortable and relaxed place in which to stay."
