Ano (‘upper’) Paphos is a world away from the posh hotels, bars and restaurants that dominate the waterfront of Kato Paphos, only a couple of miles below. There’s an old-fashioned market area (with a number of shops selling T-shirts and sunglasses as well as local arts and crafts), and a decent array of tavernas and grill-restaurants, frequented by local people more than foreign visitors. Here, you’ll find a slice of local life. Right on the district’s main drag, Kiniras is a dignified two-storey building dating from 1924, with 18 simple but comfortable en-suite rooms and a ground floor restaurant-bar, which in summer spills out into a shady terrace tucked away behind the hotel. Its ebullient boss, Georgios Gregoriou, goes out of his way to make you feel at home. The sights, shopping and nightlife of tourist Paphos and the beaches of Coral Bay are only minutes away.
