A tall palm tree shades the peaceful entrance courtyard, where rose-pink walls overlook tables and chairs made from reclaimed ships' timbers. Inside are two rooms (one with its own balcony) and a split-level suite. Colour schemes mix and match shades of pink, ochre, lemon and eau-de-nil. Wood floors are softened by Persian rugs. Antique-lovers will like the eclectic, authentic mix of antique furniture, Levantine curios and period portraits. Creature comforts, however, are very modern: comfortable natural-fibre mattresses, high thread-count Egyptian cottons, and walk-in, marble-tiled showers. Each room has an espresso machine and fully-stocked mini-bar. Guests who simply must stay connected to the outside world will find not only free wireless access but a complimentary tablet computer in each room. Breakfast is served on bone-china plates in the quiet courtyard and features freshly squeezed juices and fruit, cold cuts and Cretan cheeses, olives, yoghurt and eggs cooked to order. Drinks – including premium spirits and wines from a rather good list of Greek varietals – are also served Unlike many of Chania's small boutique hotels, La Maison Ottomane's reception desk is staffed throughout the day. Private parking spaces (a rare find in the old quiarter) make La Maison Ottomane a good base for car touring.

With its wealth of period furnishings, oil paintings of stately pashas and sultry women, and lovely touches such as the antique Persian brass beaker for a toothbrush mug, you feel as if you're staying in a luxurious home.

It's hard to find, but this cosy, quirky, open year-round property is well worth seeking out. It's close to Chania’s town but away from the noise and bustle. Three cosy and Moroccan-styled rooms are crammed with antiques. From homemade cakes to Prosecco, the owner is on hand to address your every whim.
