Hotel review

There aren't many places in Morocco where you can stay so close to the Atlantic Ocean. The water literally pounds the foundations and in high winds splashes over the roof tops. It's wonderfully dramatic and the views are spectacular. Located in the old Jewish quarter, La Perle has a traditional riad format yet has been modernised by the Swiss owner Ernest who has a great sense of humour and has been living in Essaouira for 18 years with his wife Gisèle. Rooms are light-filled and both elegant and immaculate with sumptuous beds, a desk, stained glass windows, carved wooden doors and antique punctured brass lanterns, sconces, lamps, mirrors and panelled bedheads. Bathrooms have a bathtub - a real boon. Also as a city that can get humid in summer, it's a joy to be able to open the windows and be soothed to sleep by the sound of the sea.
