Hotel Review

The modern, steel-bar frontage, bold jungle-themed wallpapers and palm-tree-filled courtyard have done a clever job of disguising this building’s former ‘70s design as the Polish consulate. The ground-floor areas have a distinctly lounge-y vibe with sea-blue and mustard-yellow velvet chairs, bold black-and-white landscape photography, and large potted ferns. This warm welcome makes up for the rather dull location on a busy, wind swept boulevard – although the Grand Place in the Old Town is less than a 10-minute walk.

Bedrooms are sleek and airy – even the standard-size are roomy – with wood floors and clean-cut furniture in pale golden hues, bold feature wallpapers and sharply modern bathrooms. There’s definitely a sunny, Mediterranean feel that belies this northern French city. If you upgrade to the Premier rooms, a free mini-bar is included.

Dining is a choice between light salads and gourmet burgers in the Ma Reine bar or more sophisticated dishes, such as flambéed bucatini with truffles and cream, in Restaurant Jane. The latter is wonderfully and idiosyncratically decorated with leopard-print wallpapers, monkey sculptures, bison’s heads and bamboo poles. Breakfast in here is a leisurely affair with a terrific spread of breads and pastries from the onsite patisserie, Le Colibri, as well as yoghurts, cold meats and cheeses, cooked eggs, plus excellent coffee.

L’arbre Voyageur, Lille

An audacious steel façade hints at the clever styling within this ultra-modern four-star hotel on the edge of Vieux-Lille. L’Arbre Voyageur stands out from the contemporary mainstream with its breezy rooms, thoughtful touches, two very good restaurants and even an on-site bakery.
