Hotel Review
It's difficult to find somewhere as well located as Mama Shelter in sprawling Los Angeles. Slap bang in between Sunset, Hollywood and Santa Monica Boulevards you're walking distance from plenty of the city's hot spots. All of Mama Shelter's properties' reflect their locality and its LA offering is no different. Lively interiors include nods to the neighbourhood's film heritage. The lift if covered from floor to ceiling with movie scripts, and guests can even find a couple of scripts in their room if you fancy a read.
The downstairs restaurant, bar and lobby has a communal feel. The ceiling is covered in chalk doodles commissioned by prominent local artists and the walls are covered in post-it notes and vintage photographs. An open plan kitchen serves up breakfast, lunch and dinner throughout the day. There is a strong emphasis on "Mama's cooking", from comfort food classics (Mama's Meatballs) to healthy breakfast options in the form of Acai bowls, all attracting plenty of outside guests. The rooftop lounge in particular is incredibly popular for evening sundowners. It often gets booked up so preference is given to in-house guests.
The rooms aren't as lively as the communal areas, providing a place of sanctuary in a bustling city. Bathrooms are simple yet perfectly formed: white subway tiles, modern fittings, power showers and personalised toiletries. Choose between a "City" or "Back Alley" which is pretty self explanatory. One has the views; the other does not. All rooms include Apple Mac televisions and complimentary minibars (excluding alcohol) as well as design quirks such as masks to use on the photo booth app - a great way to get to know your fellow guests!
A fun lively hotel, particularly on the weekends, in a young, vibrant part of town. If this is what you're looking for, then Mama Shelter is the place to go.
