If you happen to be en route from Andorra to the Spanish coast, then a night near Olot in the remote but sublimely situated El Puig (pronounced el pooch) is essential. You will have to hone your navigational skills to get there as the way is not obvious! Take the unmarked track northwards into the hills from the Mediaeval Bridge in St Joan les Fonts... but when you do arrive you will happily succumb to the almost Buddhist tranquillity of the place. This is a family property, recently built, in the traditional local vernacular (roof tiles, ochre walls) but with a contemporary twist (infinity pool, bold interior colours, funky bathrooms). There are only 8 guest rooms and you are very much invited to use the house as your own. The downstairs area is vast, open and comfortable with over-sized sofas, piles of books and masses of CD’s – Mozart, Serge Gainsbourg, Bob Marley, Puccini. It is an imaginatively-designed hotel which makes you just want to kick back and relax. Muslin draperies billow in the breeze around the pool terrace and the sound of tinkling water soothes as you gaze out into the hills beyond. The do-everything owners hail from Roses on the Costa Brava where the family still own and run one of the best and busiest beach-side seafood restaurants (Santa Lucia). Make that your next stop for lunch.
