First in: Mondrian Bordeaux Les Carmes
As the wrought-iron gates open to this stately three-storey, honey-coloured mini-castle, you could easily mistake this Philippe Starck-designed hotel for a private mansion. There’s even a carved coat of arms representing England and France above the entrance door. In reality, it’s all a carefully restored façade. As you enter the amber-scented lobby, the ambience immediately shifts, which conjures a clubby den awash with leather couches. Beyond, all is glass, wood and stone. There are no formal receptionist counters here, but rather a lovely exotic wood desk where the young staff awaits to whisk you to your room.
