If it’s history you’re after, look no further than the Monte Rosa, Zermatt’s first hotel, opened in 1855 and the place from where Edward Whymper and his ill-fated companions departed to conquer the Matterhorn ten years later. Today the charm of the Alpine Belle Epoque remains tangible, especially in the hotel’s delightful balconied façade, its first floor sitting room, full of mementoes, and its ravishing dining room. Rooms are a perfect combination of classic style and modern requirements; those on the new top floor are modern, and very stylish. The indoor pool and spa is the perfect place to relax after a day in the mountains.
