Hotel Review

Opened in July 2023, this is the third outpost of the GuestHouse group – known for its heritage buildings, super-stylish interiors and friendly staff. No.42 ticks all these boxes and is a fitting addition to uber-cool Margate’s hospitality scene. Appealing details abound – arrivals by train are welcomed with a carbon-neutral luggage transfer by bike, while peckish guests can help themselves to home-made brownies at an open-access pantry. Leave room for dinner, though – from Whitstable oysters to salt-aged steaks, food at in-house restaurant The Pearly Cow is delightful. Bedrooms decorated with freehand murals and works by local artists are infused with coastal atmosphere – the tea-making station hides inside a miniature beach hut, and towels and a Thermos flask are provided for impromptu dips from Margate Beach, opposite. Bathrooms are small but sanctuary-like, with Bramley toiletries and vases of dried flowers. After a soak in the roll-top bath, head to the roof for a cocktail.
