Perched above Via Condotti, the Italian capital’s designer shopping destination, owned by the Ferragamo fashion label, Portrait Roma is small but perfectly formed. More like staying at the home of a wealthy friend than a ‘proper’ hotel, friendly uniformed staff greet guests with a cup of espresso before showing them to their room. All are enormous, with a subdued colour scheme of greys and neutrals, and several have a balcony or terrace. Whether you’re booked into the entry-level studio or one of the penthouses, the attention to detail is next-level: from tactile soft furnishings to silken sheets, a dazzling array of bathroom toiletries to complimentary jars of upmarket snacks. Though there’s little in the way of facilities and no restaurant, the hotel’s roof terrace more than makes up for the lack. The breakfast buffet of offer here is exceptional quality, piled high with olive oil-rich focaccia and fruits that look plucked from one of the still life paintings on display in nearby galleries.

This 14-suite bolthole, a short sashay away from the Spanish Steps, is one of the city’s most stylish options, lent panache by Michele Bonan’s tasteful contemporary-retro design scheme. The discreet service, courtesy of a dedicated ‘lifestyle team’, is unparalleled – as is the cachet of the guests-only rooftop bar.
