Set in Paris’ most exclusive 16th arrondissement, within walking distance of Arc de Triomphe and Jardin de Trcadero (an excellent viewpoint for the Eiffel Tower), Relais Châteaux property, Saint James, is the city’s only official chateau hotel.

Saint James certainly has the wow-factor and it’s hard not to be in awe as you arrive at what feels like an exclusive country escape. Formerly a private residence and then a private members’ club (it still has a membership program), the hotel’s elegant social spaces encourage guests to linger and will especially appeal to couples looking for a romantic break, or small groups of friends wanting a retreat in Paris.

The vibe is relaxed - not at all stuffy. And the interior is beautiful; inspired by nature and mixing grand neoclassical features with chic style. Rooms and suites feature velvety textures, delicate flower print wallpaper, crisp bedding and antique details; as well as lovely in-room extras like a fully-stocked cocktail bar and Angelina chocolates.

Order a cocktail in the grand English style Library bar that’s filled with countless leather-bound books and plush armchairs. Tuck into a sophisticated, locally-sourced vegetable-based (picked from the hotel’s garden) and seafood menu at the fine dining restaurant Bellefeuille; overseen by acclaimed chef, Grégory Garimbay. Perhaps followed by a glass of champagne in The Terrasse outside which is set under a majestic, Versailles-green gazebo, designed like the extension of a French garden.

And for even more relaxation, there’s the hotel’s excellent spa that’s reminiscent of Greco-Roman thermal baths; boasting a 15-metre swimming pool, whirlpool, hammam, sauna and gym. Be sure to book a Guerlain spa treatment; it was one of the best our reviewer has ever experienced.

Finally, the warm and efficient service deserves a special mention. A highly recommended hotel for aspecial stay in Paris!
