What began as a local, Soldeu-family-operated sporting goods store in the 1970s, has morphed into one of the apex locations for comfort and pleasure in the Pyrenees. While it’s more of a complex than a hotel—there is also the Hermitage Mountain Residences, the 5-bedroom Hermitage Mountain Lodge, the Borda Mangautxa stone house in the Incles Valley, eight restaurants, and a pub under the Hermitage banner—the property still manages to exude a discreet coziness. This is in part down to its construction, which is in the local traditional style, with stone, timber beams, open fireplaces, and snug furnishings.
Rooms and suites have a contemporary feel, with blond wood, auburn leather, and neutral fabrics. All rooms are south-facing, with wonderful sun exposure, and views out over the Valira d’Orient river and the adjacent mountain.
Skiing is the main attraction of Soldeu, and the hotel lies at the base of Grandvalira Ski Hill, one of Europe’s largest ski resorts, with over 130 miles of pistes. Accessible by cable car, the ski resort also has a wide array of mountainside restaurants, lounges, and activities (including a Range Rover snow driving course). During the summer, the mountain is criss-crossed with bike and hiking trails, and is home to the 9-hole Golf Soldeu, the highest course in Europe at 7,000 feet above sea level.
The Hermitage goes heavy on the après-ski, and there are several restaurants to provide for all tastes: carnivores can’t go wrong at the newly opened Tradició Grill; for up-scale Japanese food and drinks there is Koy Hermitage; the fusion restaurant Ibaya holds Andorra’s sole Michelin star. Be sure not to skip the 5-storey Sport Wellness Mountain Spa, which has a plethora of Roman-sounding experiences (tepidarium, sanitarium, caldarium, sensation showers, and ice fountain), are the best way to decompress after a day on the slopes.
