The location of this small country house hotel is nigh-on perfect. In its own grounds on the shores of Windermere, Storrs Hall is outside, though close to, the tourist bustle of the central Lakes. A handsome cream-washed building – Georgian with a Victorian extension – it has a stately style yet wears its history lightly. Huge sash windows, decorative cornicing and lofty ceilings mix with bright patterned velvet armchairs, big log fires and sleek modern lighting. A sprinkling of classy antiques adds to the quiet elegance. The ornately carved wood and stained-glass Victorian bar is both wonderful and wonderfully unexpected; it came from Blackpool Tower and, together with an open fire, creates a warm and family-friendly atmosphere.
Bedrooms are generous to a fault. Most have a light-touch country-house style. If you can’t get a lake view opt for a second-floor room to give the best woodland vistas. By contrast, the six Lakeside suites – in a separate chalet-style building – are sleek and contemporary with floor-to-ceiling windows and hot-tubs on private terraces. For ultimate privacy, choose the romantically designed Boathouse.
Food is either Modern British fine dining in the restaurant – perhaps parsley-crusted halibut with Morecambe Bay brown shrimps - or homely meals, such as beer-battered fish and chips, and macaroni cheese, in the bar. There’s a wonderful lake-view terrace that cries out for afternoon tea or treat yourself to a trip in the hotel’s vintage launch with a Champagne picnic.
