The bling-tastic floor in the women’s bathroom at The Fleming Hotel proves that no expense was spared in the recent upgrade of this delightful boutique hotel. Located in Hong Kong’s buzzy Wan Chai district, the hotel’s floor is covered in 55,000 fifty cent coins and the time-worn copper patina is simultaneously dazzling and nostalgic. ‘Maritime Chic’ flows throughout the place – a nod to the city’s iconic cross-harbour ferries – from door handles made from reclaimed ocean depth gauges to the ferry-style chairs in reception, with backs that ‘switch’, depending on which direction you’re facing. The location, on an unprepossessing corner on the gritty streets of Wan Chai, ups the ‘cool’ factor, too. Pillar-box red taxis whizz past all day and all night on the neighbouring flyover; not that you’ll hear a sound inside your cabin-style bedrooms. Decked out in a colonial palette of dark wood and calming deep teal, they’re the physical manifestation of a contented sigh. And when you do venture back into the city, take the hotel’s ‘concierge’ service with you.
