Buried amidst 25 acres of forest, this eco-hideaway feels wonderfully isolated. The 13 rooms, set in tree-houses 30–45ft above the ground, have super-comfy beds, glass sliding doors taking up an entire wall and balconies with deckchairs, from where you can relish the gorgeous views of the Western Ghats. There are five categories: the heritage machan, constructed around a wild fig tree, sleeps up to six people, making it ideal for families. Couples should book a romantic suite in the forest machan; the bathrooms have outdoor rainforest showers and Jacuzzi-style bathtubs. There are no televisions here but who needs one? Spend your days playing cards and reading books, or pack a picnic and explore the 4km of private paths. Simple but scrummy local dishes are served in a cosy tented dining room or you can dine on your private deck. Go in winter (Oct–Feb) if you want to huddle around the campfire under impossibly clear skies. But the monsoon is magnificent, too, as the forests are lush and glistening – and, when the mist closes in, you’ll find yourself in a place not unlike Narnia.
