Occupying a quiet corner of a residential street in what was once the Canadian Embassy building, The Modernist makes for an ideal luxe sanctuary in the chichi Kolonaki neighbourhood. The slate grey painted façade is the first hint of the style of the hotel - a minimalist, monochrome interior that would not look out of place gracing the pages of Wallpaper or Monocle magazine. What’s notable is how lively and engaging the staff are. Rooms of varied sizes - 38 in total - are sleekly designed with all mod cons and many come with a balcony. If you are lucky enough to bag room 601, you will have a wrap-around verandah with jacuzzi and views over the rooftops. There’s even a record player with old school jazz and soul vinyl and liquor drinks trolley. The top floor hosts a bar serving snacks and cocktails and occasionally doubles up as a yoga space during the day. Every evening there’s wine-tasting in the downstairs restaurant. Buffet breakfasts are deliciously varied, from cooked to continental including healthy yoghurt with interesting toppings and tasty coffees served in divine handleless ceramic tumblers. The kind of place even solo travellers feel at home.
