This quintessentially English village pub is situated in a lovely historic village that has attracted artists and writers, including Virginia Woolf and Vanessa Bell, for generations. Located within the South Downs National Park - and some lovely walks on the doorstep - it has characterful features like wooden beams and a hearty open fire that underline the building’s 500 year history. The likes of freestanding baths and antique furniture and lamps in the six guest rooms adds to the bygone times effect, while Egyptian cotton sheets, duck down duvets, flat screen TVs and bright, white-tiled bathrooms add to the comfort. However, wifi can be patchy. The bar and restaurant areas are delightfully cosy, with dark brown walls, old pictures and photos on the walls, and a lovely old wooden bar that gets quite boisterous with the steady flow of locals visiting.

Check in here and you'll probably spot farmers, gamekeepers, local residents including artists and writers and local vicar Peter Owen Jones, known for his televisions series Around the World in 80 Faiths. Unlike many refurbished pubs, this one has a genuine and faithful complement of regulars.
