“Overlooking the picturesque Vembanad Lake this property enjoys an enviable position. Eighteen verdant acres are connected by shady walkways, gullies and streams whilst colourful cottages are decorated in a Portuguese style. Plus there's the JIVA spa, and Regional and International cuisine.”

Hotel review

Right on Vembanad Lake, to truly arrive in style you can be dropped off at the property's own private jetty. Enjoying idyllic views and tranquil scenery this is where to come and adjust to the tempo of Kerala's backwaters. Great for families, there are plenty of activities that can be enjoyed within or nearby the resort. Explore at a pedestrian pace in a traditional 'kettuvallam' (the Keralan houseboat) or ramp it up a notch and journey by more modern means: speedboat. One of the Taj chain's smallest properties, the resort contains just 28 Portuguese style, hung tiled cottages, dotted around the grounds. Accessed by private pathways crossing over trickling streams they are set back from the main thoroughfare and very secluded. Inside they are decorated in a yellow and purple colour palette, which, contrary to what usual tastes might dictate, works. Colonial era writing desks, a grandfather clock, four poster beds and terracotta tiles give the rooms a traditional feel whilst the outdoor bathrooms, complete with rainforest showers inject some fun. All cottages feature terraces with hanging swings and outdoor seating area but if you really want to treat yourself opt for the private pool villas. There are also two bed villas available - perfect for families. As with most Taj properties there is a JIVA spa, with an emphasis of Ayurvedic treatments as Kerala is its birthplace. Private yoga classes can also be arranged in your cottage, as can some treatments. Breakfast is served at Baker's Gourmet House: a spread of Indian dishes such as dosas, parathas and masala omelette plus European fare of eggs to order, waffles, pancakes, fresh fruits and fried goods. The Indian dishes are superb, especially the regional South Indian offerings, whilst the Western options are generally better avoided! A great resort for both families and couples - it is very popular amongst the domestic market.
