A tiny village, on the edge of the Northumberland National Park, is an unlikely location for this designer boutique hotel. A former coaching inn, it has been given a rustic-chic makeover - flagged floors, exposed beams and brickwork, scrubbed tables, mis-matched chairs - mixed with French-boudoir-style bedrooms. Expect plenty of dark colours, lush velvet curtains, thick carpets and ornate mirrors in the latter. Fun and flirty, with pops of bright colours in cushions and throws, their furniture is a mix of vintage, rustic and exotic. Some bathrooms are hidden behind wardrobe doors, and all are bold with Moorish tiling and sculptural basins.
Downstairs rooms are more rustic, with the buzzing bar-cum-restaurant serving above-average bar food. There’s a purpose-built, rustic barn for wedding ceremonies - with baroque marble fireplace – but if no wedding is taking place, all guests have access to this area with its conservatory, Mediterranean garden and decking.
Be aware it’s a popular wedding venue; otherwise it’s a good choice if you want to combine exploring Northumberland with a chic place to rest your head.
