Amerikalinjen is building a reputation as the king of cool among contemporary Scandinavian hoteliers. Often reserved months in advance, you need to be quick off the mark to get a room at this chic boutique hotel in central Oslo. The hotel occupies the former Norwegian America Line’s headquarters and there is a hint of 50s Fellini in the eclectic interiors. Rooms feature classic Norwegian designers, think: lamps by Birger Dahl and Hadeland Glassverk. The layout of the suites works with the early twentieth-century building's original features, like high ceilings and wooden floors; unique objects that date from the America Line era sit alongside contemporary design in a perfectly balanced blend of old and new. Like the cosy, suggestive rooms, in the hotel facilities there is a focus on unwinding and indulging. There are several eateries on-site, including the chic Atlas Brassiere and the terrace café Haven. One of the hotel's highlights is the intimate Gustav jazz club, named after the founder of Amerikalinjen. Wander down on Friday evening and allow yourself to be transported across the Atlantic by the band's sultry sounds. Oslo, the new capital of cool

There are stories behind the drinks at Oslo’s newest luxury hotel. I’m sipping champagne from a hand-blown glass while cocktails are being shaken around me. They have intriguing names such as Social Media or Discovery of Oil, but that doesn’t surprise me, for Amerikalinjen is the newborn sister to the Thief, that flauntingly seductive hotel that first put Oslo on the radar of the cool, contemporary traveller when it opened in 2014. And what a difference a few years make. Luxury, a relative newcomer to Oslo back then, is now springing up all over the city, but the opening of the Amerikalinjen has brought a whole new level of luxe with it.
