“Charming and elegant, this townhouse hotel oozes quiet calm and comfort. Bedrooms are classically designed, with generous bathrooms, and there’s both a patio and rooftop terrace - the latter with stunning views.”

Hotel review

This is the sort of quietly elegant, small hotel - monogrammed towels, uniformed housekeeping staff - you didn’t think existed any more. Tucked away from the centre in the smart district of Lapa, with its embassies and residential terraces, this 18th-century townhouse - once the home of Portuguese writer, Eça de Queriós - is beautifully quiet though on plenty of bus routes. Bedrooms are gently traditional with soft carpets, comfortable armchairs and the odd antique - decanters of sherry, too - while bathrooms are spacious, often with natural light. Rear rooms have the best views over the courtyard to the river. Breakfast in the walled courtyard is a lazy affair (served until midday) with a tempting array including assorted breads, cheeses, pastries, yogurt and fresh fruit salad. There are two extremely comfortable sitting-rooms with help-yourself drinks and biscuits, plus a rooftop library and - the real treat - rooftop terrace; the perfect spot for sundowners.
