Though a heritage exterior announces this as a pub, the Dog & Fox’s interior décor evokes a country house hotel. Even the cheapest doubles are nicely done – and all rooms come with Hypnos beds, Bramley toiletries and posh treat-packed minibars – but it’s worth splashing out on a suite; the tartan-clad Fox and deco-style Village are particular favourites. Service here is standout, from the dapper receptionists to the servers in the lovely restaurant, a real asset. Start with an aperitif selected from its extensive gin menu before sampling gastropub classics such as fish and chips – if you’re lucky your visit might coincide with a quiz night in the adjacent bar, popular with locals. Breakfast includes buffet and a la carte options, setting you up for local adventures – it’s a ten-minute walk either to Wimbledon’s Common or its famous Lawn Tennis Club – or for a day’s sightseeing in town.
