Hosting guests since the 16th century, this heritage castle - part of the family estate of the O’Briens of Dromoland - now offers guests five-star comfort in a spectacular, rural setting. Boasting a world-class golf course, falconry activities and a sleek spa, this hotel makes an idyllic hideaway for lovers of the countryside.

The hotel's imposing facade nods to the property's grand lineage (the O'Briens bloodline can be traced back 1,000 years to Brian Boru, one of the last High Kings of Ireland), while the verdant, 450-acre grounds add a perfect sense of seclusion. Inside, opulent guestrooms are dressed in layers of sink-in throws and cushions; book a suite for added grandeur within the original castle walls.

Start the day with a full Irish breakfast before setting out to explore the grounds on horseback, by bike or with a long walk. There are plenty of family-friendly activities, from the royal falconry experience to hawk walks of the castle. Head back for dinner, overseen by celebrated Executive Chef David McCann. End the day with an indulgent spa experience for two, before a nightcap at the bar.
