“This velvet-lined 18th century palace is situated right in the heart of Bologna. Rooms and suites are decorated in an opulent, elegant manner and some adorned with unique frescoes. The restaurant serves traditional regional dishes and has an excellent wine list. An upmarket stay.”

Hotel review

The Grand Hotel Majestic is everything a top-notch Italian city hotel should be, from its marble-columned foyer – where uniformed doormen greet you with amiable deference – to its plush rooms and suites. In-room colour schemes are unashamedly old-school Venetian in style, with lots of gold, burgundy and purple accents, velvet and satin, and 19th-century gilt and marble. Walk-in wardrobe spaces have enough storage space for even a Hollywood star's wardrobe. You'll find fluffy robes, slippers and posh toiletries in the big marble bathrooms, which have tubs big enough for a giant, over-tub showers, bidets and even two different kinds of toilet paper. Amid all this opulence, don't expect many concessions to the wired-up 21st century. There's free wireless access – but those who need to charge phones and other devices will find only one socket per room. Downstairs, framed photos of famous guests from Sinatra to Springsteen decorate the bar and 16th century frescoes grace the ceiling of the fine dining I Caracci restaurant. Breakfast is a lavish repast, featuring (of course) mortadella, Parma ham and local cheeses, fresh fruit, complimentary prosecco and even chocolate cake. Peek into the basement level to discover the carefully-preserved cobbles and flagstones of an ancient Roman highway.
