“In a historic building in a peerless riverfront location, the hotel New York is one of the city's landmarks. Large, sleek rooms, a choice of dining options, and a smart cocktail bar.”

Hotel review

If you want somewhere with a sense of the city's history, you won't do much better. The hotel is not only in one of Rotterdam's iconic buildings - the former Art Nouveau-style head office of the Holland America Line, built in 1901 - but also on the tip of the Kop van Zuid peninsula with uninterrupted views both downriver towards the port and across to the city centre. Sleek bedrooms are large and lofty, with Art Deco touches in lighting and bathrooms. Insider tip, it's worth splashing out for river-view rooms. For such an impressive building, however, some public rooms can be a bit characterless, although the basement fine-dining restaurant has a jazzy, 1920s, Manhattan feel and an impressive cocktail bar. For something more casual, the main cafe-restaurant is an all-day affair offering everything from burgers and bistro staples to a good choice of seafood from its oyster bar. Make sure you arrive by water-taxi (there's a stop outside the hotel); it's fun and adds a sense of glamour.
