Lainston House, a 17th century William & Mary former private home, has an almost other-wordly feel, set in beautiful surroundings: a three quarters of a mile long avenue of lime trees leads to a landscape as far as the eye can see, of hills and woodland, without another building in sight. It is hard to believe that Winchester is only two miles away. Hampshire at its most glorious. The food here is exceptional; modern British food sourced locally (including from Lainston’s own kitchen garden) and the service friendly, knowledgeable and yet unobtrusive. It helps that there is a cookery school on site. Bedrooms range from the cosy to the palatial, individually decorated in a traditional style, there's even one with a private hot tub. A special place: one of those hotels where you feel it is a privilege to stay in such a lovely spot.
