Step inside this sprawling Edwardian house and you’re wrapped in a feeling of calm and comfort. Owned by the Kennedy family since 1984, it retains a gracious period feel but without fuss or formality. There are sitting-rooms plump with sofas and window-seats, a dining-room designed to capture the best views of the terraced gardens and fells, and family photographs, books and flowers to encourage guests to put their feet up and relax. Everyone is welcomed with tea and home-made scones. Bedrooms are traditional country-house in style but done with a light touch. No two are the same, yet all have views and the same luxury comforts of robes, sherry and coffee machines. Even the smallest rooms are designed to make the best use of space, and feel light and airy. Handsome supper platters can be ordered which, like the breakfasts and afternoon teas, are made in-house. Walks beckon but you may find it hard to drag yourself away from sitting on the terrace and enjoying the views.

Why do people love staying in your hotel? Looking through our guest feedback forms from this weekend I will quote some of the comments if I may. “It is the little things that made the stay – the sherry in the room and the iced water, the tea and homemade scones on arrival. The staff made us feel welcome from the minute we arrived” “Everything was excellent. The ambiance, staff, food, accommodation all first class. Nothing was too much trouble. Specially loved your breakfast marmalade!” “A lovely stay. What a beautiful garden, so peaceful by the little lake.” What kind of breakfast do you offer? A generous selection of cooked breakfasts are prepared to order, including Cumberland grill, kippers or Finnan haddock, full vegetarian and free range eggs. Also a help yourself buffet which includes croissants, homemade granola, freshly squeezed orange juice, homemade yoghurt, and our award winning marmalade. Do you offer other meals? And can you recommend good places to eat out locally? Homemade soup, sandwiches, afternoon tea throughout the day. Also a range of platters which must be ordered 24 hours before. Yes, we have many excellent restaurants nearby to suit every taste and occasion. Which are your most popular room types, and why? All our rooms are completely different and popular for different reasons but our 6 lake view rooms are top of everyone’s list of favourites. What facilities do you have for children and can you fit extra beds in your rooms ? Some rooms can take one extra bed or travel cot by prior arrangement. High chairs available and baby monitors. What message would you like to give Hotel Guru readers? The Kennedy family and their excellent staff have this year been awarded Boutique guest accommodation of the year by Cumbria Tourism. Do come and see why!
