Bought by Beatrix Potter for her mother, after the author enjoyed holidays here, this substantial Victorian house, in a quiet residential area, enjoys fabulous views over Lake Windermere. Original plasterwork ceilings, dado panelling and sweeping windows remain but the furnishing style has been dramatically updated into a bold, contemporary country-house style. Think vividly patterned carpets, bright plaids and jazzy velvets, deep-hued walls and bold artwork. While this style flows throughout the ground-floor sitting-rooms, bar and dining-room, the bedrooms are more demure with a contemporary-classic look of feature wallpapers, modern armchairs, and plaid throws and cushions. A little unexciting, perhaps, but all are generous, with modern bathrooms. It’s worth forking out for garden- and lake-view rooms. Or opt for one of the cosy attic rooms.
Dinner is a smart, two-AA rosette affair with canapés and amuse bouche and where dressing-up is encouraged; a pianist on Saturday nights, too. Spend your days on gentle walks, cruising on the lake or exploring Beatrix Potter country – or curled up with a book in one of the lounges overlooking the six acres of gardens.

This sprawling Victorian mansion, with Beatrix Potter associations, has had a striking contemporary makeover throughout the ground floor. Wrapped in mature gardens, it feels blissfully private, yet is just a 10-minute walk from Lake Windermere...
