Kastellorizo (also called Megisti) is literally off the map; so far to the south-east of Rhodes that it doesn’t feature on most official charts. But for those who make the journey (by air or ferry from Rhodes), it’s a joy, with multi-coloured houses ringing a deep blue, fjord-like harbour. Mediterraneo is one of these, efficiently run by its Greek-Swiss owners. The rooms are cool and airy, and though there’s no pool there are quayside loungers and a bathing ladder leading to dazzling turquoise water steps from your door.

Kastellorizo harbour is an artist’s dream of colourful shuttered houses huddled round a tear-shaped bay, backdropped by spectacular cliffs and snow-capped Turkish mountains. Mediterraneo captures elements of East and West with effortless boho style.
