The unusual layout of this large, elegant riad stands it apart from other more traditional guest houses; instead of rooms regimentally centred round a courtyard, they are spread out — some reached by narrow walkways, others generously proportioned with seating areas, sizeable bathrooms and private terrace. It’s also decorated in a very appealing way with a feminine touch, thanks to the British owner Philomena, using vintage furniture, fabrics and retro finds. The main courtyard has a jungle vibe where guests can eat breakfast and dinner in one of the alcoves or the fire-heated salon. A boutique sells stylish wares and for hotter months there’s a pool for cooling off. It’s style-conscious in a low-key way, yet super comfortable: fluffy pillows and duvets, deep bathtubs (a bonus in winter), power showers, soft linen and towels, blackout curtains, sensitive lighting...all the details that count after a hectic day in the city. Salah, the efficient manager is on hand to organise taxis and advise on plans while loaning guests a local old school phone — a godsend if you are late for an appointment or get lost in the souk. A stylish, comfortable Brit-owned 150-year old riad in the old town. In a quiet spot, this would suit couples wanting a romantic hideaway, single travellers or writers wanting peace away from the mayhem.
