Twenty years ago, Astana was nothing but a provincial town with no building higher than a dozen stories. Today, it is a hotspot of brazen architecture and glassy pomp, full of museums, arenas, boutique restaurants, and tourists. Near the Baiterek Tower, and in the shadow of the Abu Dhabi Plaza tower – the tallest building in Kazakhstan – the Sheraton sits smack bang in the centre of the new Esil District, the so-called “left bank,” that is the newly built southern part of the city. The rather bland façade hides an interior that blends Kazakh patterns into the walls and wooden panels. Rooms, some in white and gold with dark oak furniture, are also adorned with pleasing traditional patterns. Come night, the blackout curtains are a must, as the view over Astana is a futuristic vista of glowing lights and giant, flashing LCD screens.
Day passes are needed to enter the spa and fitness area, and cost £40. Adjoining the pool area, a terrace with bar services offers views over the city. The hotel is popular for business, and consequently has plenty of public lounging and meeting spaces.
Come the evenings, the two on site restaurants are full of chatter. Emiliya is a family-friendly restaurant that caters to an international clientele – you will find Uyghur cuisine, French pastries, and, given the time of year, holiday-themed (think Hallowe’en, Ramadan, Christmas, etc) menu items. Breakfast has an equally global touch. The more sophisticated Salter’s, on the other side of the hotel, is styled as a “contemporary Kazakh” restaurant and bar, which means both USDA beef and local horse are on the menu. There is also nightly live music, and a much fussed over cocktail menu, where classic recipes are given a regional twist and named after a national instrument. The staff are wonderful and cheerful, always ready to help with a smile.
