With a striking crescent shape, to fit its corner site in the heart of the town, The Crescent has one of the plum positions in Ilkley. The famous Ilkley Moor is a 15-minute stroll while the River Wharfe and its pretty riverside gardens, the Grove Promenade shops and the town’s many bars and tea-rooms are on the doorstep. The Victorian building has retained original features - a handsome staircase, large sash windows, pillared dining-room - but has been given a sassy, slightly French feel in homage to its French-bistro restaurant. Expect petrol-blue walls, stripped-wood floors and copper-topped tables in the bar, while the restaurant has panelled and mirrored walls, intricate ironwork lampshades and gold-etched lettering in the windows, such as Patisserie Maison. Moody black-and-white photographs of local landmarks give a sense of place. Bedrooms continue the French theme with limed-wood armoires and elegant boudoir chairs. The look is fresh, simple and uncluttered, the small ones definitely cosy and the front rooms having the best views over the town. Dine either in the pub with its hearty portions and hand-pulled ales, or in the smarter Bistrot Pierre which serves up French classics such as steak-frites and bouillabaisse. A good, well-priced (mainly French) wine list, too. Work it all off with a blast on Ilkley Moor with its fine views across Wharfedale.
