The George has been an Edinburgh institution for more than a century, and it's the epitome of a gracious New Town property. Unsurprisngly, it's a listed building. Created originally from five adjoining townhouses, the well-proportioned rooms and clubby public spaces are repleted with period touches from elegant stucco folderols to polished oak and brass, glass and marble, all softened by thick carpets, antique leather and touches of tweed and velvet. The colour scheme is a palette of soft greys, greens and creamy tones. Room options include singles as well as doubles, twins and suites, and in-room facilities include plasma TV and safes big enough to store your laptop. The Printing Press bar and restaurant serves dinner until 10pm, with a late-night bar that stays open until 1am, so appeals to night owls – as does the hotel's location, on George Street, home to most of Edinburgh's upscale nightspots.

'There’s nothing stuffy about Edinburgh’s oldest hotel; it does classy/contemporary on a grand scale throughout. With a hip(ish) coffee shop, bar and brasserie-style restaurant and impressively up-to-date bedrooms and suites, most of what has been lost in old-fashioned character is gained in style.'
