About San Cassiano

San Cassiano is known for being small and picturesque, because of both its village charm, and its spectacular setting amongst the Dolomites. Come winter, this isn’t one of the busiest ski resorts in the region, but it is certainly one of the most beautiful, and the peace and relaxed atmosphere are what regular visitors come back for. San Cassiano isn’t one of the busiest summer centres in the Dolomites either, but it’s well connected to the trails that run through the region. Whatever the season, San Cassiano punches above its weight when it comes to beauty and uisine, with a reputation for fantastic food in its mountain restaurants during the ski season, as well as a number of excellent cafes and restaurants in its almost entirely pedestrianised centre. Our recommendations for the best places to stay in San Cassiano also benefit from the beautiful location, and incredible views of the Dolomites. Our picks include a large, but traditional looking, ski chalet, a stylish aparthotel, and a gorgeous heritage hotel with a two Michelin starred restaurant.

Skiers choosing San Cassiano are linked to the whole of the Sella Ronda skiable area, which includes around a thousand kilometres worth of piste. And you only need the one ski pass. Most of our recommended hotels are a short drive from the main gondola, but many of them have a shuttle service, and if you want to stay around town, the local chairlifts take you up into the surrounding mountains at a relaxing pace allowing for maximum enjoyment of the view.

San Cassiano is also perfect for active families in both summer and winter. As well as skiing, San Cassiano has a toboggan run and lots of cross country trails to explore. In summer the beautiful scenery is alive with colour and sunshine. As well as all the outdoorsy stuff there's a prehistoric cave bear museum and a First World War museum.

The Best Places to Stay in San Cassiano

For families

For foodies

  • The Rosa Alpina is a charming hotel that has been lovingly managed by the same family for the last seventy-odd years and whose decor is a stylishly pared back version of a traditional ski chalet. The location is magnificent, surrounded by pine forests, and looked down upon by granite massifs; the stylish restaurant specialising in local cuisine has two Michelin stars; the spa is luxurious; the ski concierge is incredibly useful; and they run great activities for kids.

For the view

  • While all our recommendations for where to stay in San Cassiano have wonderful views, the Ciasa Salares is quite special for the way it’s really tucked into the landscape, between the hills and surrounded by pine trees. There are 50 rooms and suites, many with private balconies, and all decorated in classic ski chalet style, with plenty of blonde wood and cosy details. The huge indoor pool and spa, and the restaurant both have incredible views too — through walls of windows — and you can walk or ski right from the front door.

Travel information

  • Air travellers to San Cassiano have a few choices, as the whole of the South Tyrol region is within a sort of square of international airports. Innsbruck Airport is closest (around an hour and three quarters from San Cassiano by road, or three and a half by public transport); Venice’s Marco Polo Airport is next closest (around two hours away by road, or close to four hours if you go by public transport); Verona Villafranca Airport is about two and a half hours away by road, or four and a half by train; and furthest away, but still very useful because it’s one of the largest on the list, Milan Bergamo Airport, which is about three and a half hours away by road, or almost seven hours away by train. There are also numerous rail hubs in the vicinity.

  • San Cassiano’s ski season officially starts around the beginning of December, lasting until early April, with the best natural snow cover predicted for January and February, though snow-making facilities cover around half the resort’s runs. The summer season of walking, biking, climbing and exploration, starts as soon as the snow starts to melt, but is busiest in the school holiday months.
