About Talloires
Flanked by mountains on the eastern side of spectacular Lake Annecy, pretty Talloires is a brilliant destination for couples, friends or families. The town has roots stretching back to the Roman era, and a curious identity as part of Burgundy, Savoy and France. A booming tourist destination since the 19th Century, it offers an array of accommodation options, ranging from lakeside cottages to an impressive converted monastery. Chosen for their style, location and amenities, our list of the best places to stay in Talloires promise an idyllic lakeside escape. Many of them are renowned for their gastronomic cuisine.
The inevitable focus of any visit to Talloires is Lake Annecy itself. Famed for having some of the clearest waters in France, the country’s third-largest lake is ideal for swimming, sailing, kayaking, paddle boarding, fishing, snorkelling and diving. Boat trips also come highly recommended, as does touring the villages and towns which dot the lake’s shores. Nature lovers will delight in hiking to the magical Cascade d'Angon, hidden in the mountains, clambering up Le Col de la Forclaz or discovering the Roc de Chère and surrounding nature reserve.
If you’re here for the history, look to the Château de Duingt, the medieval Château de Menthon-Saint-Bernard or the Saint-Germain l'Ermitage Church. To soak up ancient sites and nature wonders all at once, take to the skies with paragliding or hot air balloon tours. The Best Places to Stay in Talloires
For Lakeside Bliss
- Le Cottage Bise is a welcoming 23-room oasis with comfortable, contemporary rooms, many of which have private lake-facing balconies. There's a superb spa, a swimming pool in the garden, and gastronomic cuisine served in the smart restaurant or on the veranda. Lovely.
- Hôtel Beau Site sits slightly above its own private beach accessed through leafy, sloping gardens. Fresh, stylish interiors are clad in dove grey, taupe and steel blue, the tented lakeside space is very special, and families will adore the friendly vibe. Cycle, swim, fish and try your hand at watersports on the lake.
For Foodies
- Auberge du Pere Bise is also right on the lake. It stands out, however, because of its long-standing reputation as one of France's most famous inns. Families are very welcome, but we like this spot best as a waterfront pad for food-focused grown-ups or romantic couples dreaming of a touch of luxury. Chef-owner Jean Sulpice's gourmet restaurant has been awarded two Michelin stars: it's an absolute gem.
- Abbaye de Talloires is a stunning converted monastery, perched on the edge of the lake at the end of the lakeside road. Undoubtedly one for history buffs or romantics, this is a hugely characterful hotel, complete with coffered ceilings, antique furnishings, rich textiles and free-standing tubs in big bathrooms. Traditional lakeside luxury, with gastronomic dining in the evenings in the charming garden.
For Contemporary Cool
- Chalet Christine is set a little further from the water, offering panormanic lake and mountain views from swish rooms and suites decorated in a soothing cream and white palette, with wooden beams and all the mod-cons. Big buffet breakfasts kick-start the day, whilst the indoor pool, sauna and hot tub are ideal for unwinding. Very chic.
