About Madrid Region
Set in the centre of the Iberian Peninsula, the Madrid region is the starting point for many journeys into this fascinating country. Much of the region is dominated by the city of Madrid itself, Spain's elegant, vibrant and historic capital, which attracts millions of visitors a year. We’re huge fans of the city, and think it should be high on the itinerary of anyone eager to delve into Spain’s rich heritage as well as its arts and food scene. There are, however, also wonderful hotels outside the city itself — and our selection of the best places to stay in the Madrid region highlights our top urban and rural suggestions.
If you’re craving an outdoorsy adventure, venture up into the rugged Sierra de Guadarrama. There, you’ll find hiking, cycling and horse riding trails, as well as ample opportunities to spot wildlife and impressive birds in the Peñalara Natural Park. Come winter, the Puerto de Navacerrada area is brilliant for skiing and snow-boarding, attracting sports enthusiasts from Madrid and further afield. The mountains are dotted with ancient heritage sites, too.
Whether you choose to base yourself in the city or to stay somewhere more rural, Madrid itself is not to be missed. Tour world-class museums, taste fresh produce and pick up artisanal crafts at vast markets, or party late into the night at the myriad bars, clubs and eateries which keep the city buzzing long past midnight. Rooms at the best places to stay in the Madrid region tend to fill up fast, so book your trip well in advance!
The Best Places to Stay in the Madrid Region

The hotel's art gallery is fascinating, and the pool ideal for refreshing dips after hikes or days in the city. Round things off with cocktails in the garden.
- Hotel Urban in central Madrid has angular, art deco-influenced interiors in dark woods and neutrals, with plenty of chrome. FOR HISTORIC GRANDEUR
- Gran Hotel Inglés is proud to be the oldest hotel in Madrid, having opened in 1886. The spa is sensational, too.
- AC Palacio de Retiro was built in 1908, and its Edwardian façade hides a fascinating history; the original owners once exercised their horses on the roof! Now, interiors are chic and comfortable, with lots of natural light, crisp white linens and Belle Epoque architectural details. The basement spa with sauna, hot tub, steam room and cold shower is not to be missed.
- The Mandarin Oriental Ritz Madrid, set on the city's Paseo del Prado, is a stunning landmark. Completed in 1910 to create additional space for Alfonso XIII's wedding guests, this sumptuous hotel continues to offer the best of the best. Think antique furnishings, embroidered bedsheets and marble bathrooms, and an elegant restaurant spilling out onto a marble terrace and pretty gardens. A luxurious gem.
- AC Santo Mauro, a former duke's palace, dates back to 1894. A wonderful glass entrance, elegant windows and a sense of sophistication feel reminiscent of belle époque Paris. For a Restored Monastery
- Parador de Alcala de Henares sits in the cloister of a 16th-century monastery. Carefully restored to showcase the building's original architecture, interiors are pared-back and contemporary, with white linens and white walls. The courtyard, surrounded by historic arches, is lovely — as is the excellent restaurant, which specialises in traditional cuisine.
- Parador de Chinchón, south-east of Madrid, has a more classic feel. Also a restored monastery — this time from the 17th Century — this heritage hotel offers 38 rooms and suites, many with four-poster beds, opulent fabrics and mural artworks. The vaulted dining room is a delight, as is the courtyard swimming pool. The two eateries serve regional dishes. Romantic and restful.
FOR A Mountain Retreat

- The Madrid region is wonderful for a road trip! Contact our online partner Rentalcars if you would like to hire a car.
- Madrid is a year-round destination. Temperatures rise above 30°C during the day in July and August, but it's not very humid, so evenings are much cooler. The city does feel particularly busy during the summer months, and many Madrileños head off to the beach or the mountains in August. Visit in spring or autumn for cooler climes and fewer crowds. If you're looking for winter sports in the Sierra de Guadarrama, travel between December and March.
