About Madrid Region

Set in the centre of the Iberian Peninsula, the Madrid region is the starting point for many journeys into this fascinating country. Much of the region is dominated by the city of Madrid itself, Spain's elegant, vibrant and historic capital, which attracts millions of visitors a year. We’re huge fans of the city, and think it should be high on the itinerary of anyone eager to delve into Spain’s rich heritage as well as its arts and food scene. There are, however, also wonderful hotels outside the city itself — and our selection of the best places to stay in the Madrid region highlights our top urban and rural suggestions.

If you’re craving an outdoorsy adventure, venture up into the rugged Sierra de Guadarrama. There, you’ll find hiking, cycling and horse riding trails, as well as ample opportunities to spot wildlife and impressive birds in the Peñalara Natural Park. Come winter, the Puerto de Navacerrada area is brilliant for skiing and snow-boarding, attracting sports enthusiasts from Madrid and further afield. The mountains are dotted with ancient heritage sites, too.

Whether you choose to base yourself in the city or to stay somewhere more rural, Madrid itself is not to be missed. Tour world-class museums, taste fresh produce and pick up artisanal crafts at vast markets, or party late into the night at the myriad bars, clubs and eateries which keep the city buzzing long past midnight. Rooms at the best places to stay in the Madrid region tend to fill up fast, so book your trip well in advance!

The Best Places to Stay in the Madrid Region

For Art Enthusiasts

  • La Torre Box Art Hotel, north-west of Madrid itself, is a beautifully converted 19th-century mansion. Expect understated interiors, with big garden-facing windows, original art pieces and a soothing palette punctuated by warm dark blue textiles. The hotel's art gallery is fascinating, and the pool ideal for refreshing dips after hikes or days in the city. Round things off with cocktails in the garden.
  • Hotel Urban in central Madrid has angular, art deco-influenced interiors in dark woods and neutrals, with plenty of chrome. Owner Jordi Clos, a Barcelona-based archaeologist, showcases his impressive collection of artefacts throughout the 100 rooms and suites. There’s a lively cocktail bar, which is all monochrome and marble, and the restaurant and rooftop plunge pool are superb.
  • 7 Islas is a converted warehouse-turned-hotel in the increasingly trendy Triball district. Redesigned by KikeKeller studio, the hotel has minimalist white-on-white interiors with woven traditional rugs given centre stage. Art aficionados will adore touring the hotel's private gallery before sampling craft cocktails at the hip bar. Very cool.

FOR Couples

  • Totém exudes simple elegance in central Madrid. With 64 rooms and suites, it's smaller than a lot of Madrid's big hitters, but it packs a plunch when it come to style and atmosphere. Gather at the buzzy cocktail bar and restaurant in your glad rags before heading out to see the city by night. Guest rooms are understated yet thoughtfully decorated. A lovely boutique choice for couples.
  • Heritage Madrid Hotel is an impeccably stylish hotel with beautiful interiors designed by Lorenzo Castillo. Expect striking tiles, patterned fabrics, designer wallpaper and indulgent bathrooms. Couples will adore unwinding at this romantic bolthole. The roof terrace completes the picture!
  • CoolRooms Atocha offers 35 rooms and suites in Madrid's lively Literary Quarter. Think art deco with a modern twist: brass accents, clean lines, marble bathrooms and moody blue-grey tones. Book a suite with a hot tub for a romantic escape! The city's highlights are right on your doorstepl at this romantic pick.

For Families

  • Slow Suites Luchana offers attractive contemporary apartments for couples, families and groups in Madrid. Well-equipped kitchens, sitting rooms and dining areas offer a sense of independence — particularly for longer-stay guests — whilst the proximity to trendy Malasaña is great for artsy explorations.
  • Eric Vökel Madrid Suites are housed in a restored townhouse in trendy Malasaña. Families and groups will love the multi-bedroom contemporary apartments, which offer private kitchens, sitting rooms, dining spaces and terraces. Pets are welcome upon request, too. Very chic.
  • Barcelo Torre de Madrid is amongst the city's most iconic buildings. Transformed into a design-led hotel, this spot welcomes families as well as couples to spacious rooms and suites with bright furnishings and lovely city views. The indoor swimming pool will be a sure-fire hit with guests of all ages, and grown-ups will adore the spa.

FOR HISTORIC GRANDEUR

  • Gran Hotel Inglés is proud to be the oldest hotel in Madrid, having opened in 1886. In its current incarnation, it is a beautiful blend of old and new, with striking Art Deco spaces, David Rockwell-designed fabrics and a sense of timeless sophistication in guest rooms clad in white, grey, warm red and gold. The spa is sensational, too.
  • AC Palacio de Retiro was built in 1908, and its Edwardian façade hides a fascinating history; the original owners once exercised their horses on the roof! Now, interiors are chic and comfortable, with lots of natural light, crisp white linens and Belle Epoque architectural details. The basement spa with sauna, hot tub, steam room and cold shower is not to be missed.
  • The Mandarin Oriental Ritz Madrid, set on the city's Paseo del Prado, is a stunning landmark. Completed in 1910 to create additional space for Alfonso XIII's wedding guests, this sumptuous hotel continues to offer the best of the best. Think antique furnishings, embroidered bedsheets and marble bathrooms, and an elegant restaurant spilling out onto a marble terrace and pretty gardens. A luxurious gem.
  • AC Santo Mauro, a former duke's palace, dates back to 1894. A wonderful glass entrance, elegant windows and a sense of sophistication feel reminiscent of belle époque Paris. Spacious rooms and suites are much more contemporary, and there's a swimming pool and fitness centre in the basement. The library-restaurant is a highlight.

FOR FOODIES

  • Posada de Léon de Oro is a charming restaurant-with-rooms in Madrid, famed for offering some of the best traditional fare in the city. Tuck into hearty Spanish cuisine at Enotaberna, paired with well-chosen regional wines, before retreating to one of the 17 simple guest rooms.
  • Hotel Unico is a restored 19th-century palace in Madrid with chic, contemporary interiors. Foodies will be thrilled to experience two-Michelin-starred chef Ramón Freixa’s fusion of the traditional and the avant-garde in the smart dining room. Expect the freshest regional produce and superb tasting menus.
  • Hyatt Regency Hesperia Madrid is another big-hitter, with 171 rooms and suites and a well-deserved reputation for excellence. Sip cocktails at the Mery Bárbola Bar before savouring Spanish haute cuisine at the Smoked Room Restaurant, which has been awarded two Michelin stars. Seating just 14 guests for 15-course menus curated by chef Dani Garcia, this spot promises a culinary journey unlike any other.

For a Restored Monastery

  • Parador de Alcala de Henares sits in the cloister of a 16th-century monastery. Carefully restored to showcase the building's original architecture, interiors are pared-back and contemporary, with white linens and white walls. The courtyard, surrounded by historic arches, is lovely — as is the excellent restaurant, which specialises in traditional cuisine.
  • Parador de Chinchón, south-east of Madrid, has a more classic feel. Also a restored monastery — this time from the 17th Century — this heritage hotel offers 38 rooms and suites, many with four-poster beds, opulent fabrics and mural artworks. The vaulted dining room is a delight, as is the courtyard swimming pool. The two eateries serve regional dishes. Romantic and restful.

FOR A Mountain Retreat

  • Hotel Nava Real is a beautifully restored farmhouse in the heart of the Sierra de Guadarrama. You're close to a little village which fills up with skiers in winter, but in the warmer months there's plenty of mountain biking, fishing and hiking to be done. The 16 generously sized rooms are cosy and rustic, plus there's a great little restaurant and terrace.

FOR AN APARTMENT OR HOLIDAY VILLA

  • If you'd prefer a self-catering option, we suggest that you visit our online partner Booking.com.

Travel Information

  • Fly to Adolfo Suarez Madrid Bajaras Airport, just seven miles from the centre of Madrid. Take a taxi, bus or train from there to your destination in the wider region. If you're travelling from within Spain, you may find it easier to simply take the train, which connects key cities across the country.
  • The Madrid region is wonderful for a road trip! Contact our online partner Rentalcars if you would like to hire a car.
  • Madrid is a year-round destination. Temperatures rise above 30°C during the day in July and August, but it's not very humid, so evenings are much cooler. The city does feel particularly busy during the summer months, and many Madrileños head off to the beach or the mountains in August. Visit in spring or autumn for cooler climes and fewer crowds. If you're looking for winter sports in the Sierra de Guadarrama, travel between December and March.
