About Tenerife
The largest of the Canary Islands, Tenerife is a volcanic land fringed by sandy beaches and famed for its almost year-round sunshine. Hugely popular with holidaymakers throughout the year, it’s in many way an ideal Spanish island destination, with the ultimate combination of fabulous landscapes, cuisine and culture — along with a lively buzz. For keen resort-goers of all ages, Tenerife really does have it all. There’s also, however, a tranquil side to the island, with little seaside villages and rural escapes perfect for keen hikers. Our Gurus’ list of the best places to stay in Tenerife offers a real sense of this range, highlighting everything from dazzling beach resorts to intimate heritage residences and mountain hideaways.

Most travellers skip Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the island’s capital, but it’s actually a brilliant starting point for those eager to understand the island’s history — as well as to tap into its modern foodie scene. Nearby San Cristobál de La Laguna is also fascinating. La Orotava, a historic town on the edge of the Teide National Park, offers the best of both worlds, with striking landmark buildings as well as easy access to the adventures of the volcanic national park.
If you’re dreaming of big beaches for swimming and sandy strolls, as well as some great nightlife and stacks of activities, look to Costa Adeje or Playa de las Américas, on the island’s western side. Puerto de la Cruz, to the north, also offers some great family-friendly hotels and swimmable beaches, but with a more laid-back vibe. For intimate B&Bs and restored private houses by the sea, consider charming Garachico, the island's oldest port. Do be aware that the best places to stay in Tenerife book up quickly during both the summer months and the winter school holidays — it's worth planning your trip well in advance!
The Best Places to Stay on Tenerife
For Heritage Charm
- Hotel Laguna Nivaria is an elegant 16th-century mansion-turned-boutique hotel in San Cristobal de La Laguna. The restaurant specialises in excellent regional cuisine, crafted using organic ingredients grown on the hotel's own farm. Lovely and romantic.

- La Quinta Roja, the 16th-century home of the Marquis de Quinta Roja in Garachico, has been sensitively restored. Now a lovely boutique hotel, the house has simple contemporary furnishings set against original wood and stone elements. FOR A RURAL ESCAPE
- Hotel el Patio, on the edge of the village of El Guincho, is brilliant for those looking to unwind in blissful natural surroundings. Whitewashed buildings with terracotta-tiled roofs hide airy guest rooms, plus there's a swimming pool, tennis court and verdant gardens. Amble along to the beach as a family, or simply soak up the sunshine on your terrace.
- Hotel Villalba, a hillside retreat in the mountains near the Teide National Park, is another favourite for keen hikers. Most of the 27 rooms have private balconies and pared-back interiors, and there’s a shaded pool and wellness centre with a sauna and hot spring for unwinding post-adventure. The gardens are lovely too.
- Parador de las Canadas del Teide, the only hotel on the island situated within a nature reserve, is about as off-the-beaten-track as you can get. Pick this place for mountain treks, striking scenery and a sense of calm. Rooms are simple and charming, plus there's a pool, gym and restaurant.
- La Casona del Patio, set between the Teno Mountains and the Chinyero Nature Reserve, promises a comfortable rural escape. The seafood restaurant is excellent, the 20 bedrooms are very inviting, and there are hikes aplenty right on your doorstep. A country gem.

TRAVEL INFORMATION
- Depending on your destination, fly to Tenerife South Airport or to Tenerife Norte Airport. Most hotels will be happy to arrange an airport pick up in advance, and you'll never be further than an hour from an airport on the island.
- It's wonderful to explore Tenerife with the freedom of your own transport. Contact our online partner Rentalcars if you would like to hire a car.
- Sunny and warm for almost 365 days of each year, Tenerife’s subtropical climate is one of the reasons it’s such a popular year round destination. You can still swim in the ocean during December and January and expect blue skies and mild weather. Because of this, Tenerife’s busiest season is between November and March, when Europeans travel to the island in search of winter sun.
