A fortified city near the banks of the Tagus River, Toledo has a long history as a cultural and religious centre. Once Spain’s capital, it remains a fascinating Castile-La Mancha destination for arts and culture buffs, just over an hour southwest of Madrid. Most visitors come just for the day, but the best places to stay in Toledo are surprisingly intimate and affordable. We’d highly recommend taking a few days to fall under the spell of the city — it really is very special.
One of the most famous cathedrals in Spain, the Catedral de Toledo is a striking Gothic medieval building, and a wonderful starting point for exploring the old town. The Sinagoga del Tránsito, built in 1355 and now housing the Museo Sefardí, offers a fascinating insight into the long history of Sephardic Jews in the region. There are countless landmarks dotted around the old town, with other highlights including the Monasterio San Juan de los Reyes, the Museo de Santa Cruz — in a 16th-century hospital — and the unusual Museo del Greco. Venture to the highest point in the city to discover the imposing Alcázar, which was rebuilt under Franco and has now been transformed into an enormous military museum. Stroll the city's narrow streets to spot little museums, heritage home, galleries and cafés aplenty: this is a magical place to get lost.
Join locals in the lively Plaza de Zocodover for buzzy markets and evening tipples, delve into the subterranean remains of the city’s Roman baths, or cross the river to marvel at the walled city from afar. One of the best places to stay in Toledo sits just across the water and promises mesmerising views as well as superb regional cuisine.
