About Khao Lak

This series of tourist-orientated coastal villages provide a perfect hideaway in the South West of Thailand. The name literally means ‘Lak Mountain’, and that’s what you get! The picturesque beaches sit below a heavily forested mountain that looks out over an emerald sea. The area is popular with those heading to the Similan Islands to scuba dive but is definitely worth visiting in its own right. Although many beaches in Thailand are known for their surreal parties, bustling bars and crowds of tourists, Khao Lak is much quieter. The resorts are secluded, the beaches uncrowded and the nights better suited for families than full-moon revellers. We’ve selected the best places in Khao Lak from which to see a different side to Thailand.

Temperatures in Khao Lak stay at around 30 degrees year round but to avoid the rain, aim to go between December and March.

What not to miss:

  • White Sand Beach - Unsurprisingly, this is a white sand beach! Very beautiful with clear water and great for a long walk when the tide’s out.

  • Pak Weep Beach - Another patch of paradise! Visit Mr Bao at the end of the beach for food and refreshments.

  • Ton Chong Fa Waterfall - Rent a bike and make the easy cycle ride to this beautiful waterfall. It costs around $3 to park your bike near the water.

  • Moo Moo Cabaret show bar. For a fun night of tongue in cheek cabaret visit Moo Moo’s. Audience participation encouraged!
